October 25, 2024 Dear San Marco Church Family: It is an exciting time of year with many sporting events, an election, and the approach of the holiday season. Can you believe it is only 60 days until Christmas! Sometimes I want time to slow down just a bit, but as the saying goes, “Time waits for no one.” It is also the time of year when churches generally have stewardship campaigns. I know that both pastors and church members often dread these campaigns. However, I want to look at this as an opportunity to define the term “stewardship” and to see stewardship as involving much more than money. When we become members of a United Methodist Church, we commit to support the local church with our “prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.” For the next three Sundays, I will offer messages based upon the meaning of this commitment. For this sermon series, I am using a book entitled “Enough” by Adam Hamilton. Rev. Hamilton wrote the book in 2009 just after the economic crisis of 2008. I encourage you to get the book, as it offers a very comprehensive perspective on how we manage money. This week’s message is entitled “When the Dream Becomes a Nightmare”, which is a reference to a chapter in the book. It is also a reality for many people when the “American dream” of accumulating wealth becomes a nightmare. Please attend worship in person if possible and pray for me as I prepare the message. I am dependent upon your prayers! Finally, I am excited to attend “Cadillac Crew” at the church tonight. I have heard wonderful things about this production, and I heard a rumor that there are tickets still available.
