One of the greatest privileges of being a leader here at San Marco Church is witnessing how the individual journeys of our members, friends, and attendees intertwine to shape the life of our congregation. This is the beautiful mystery of church life: each personal narrative becomes a thread woven into the larger tapestry of SMC. Just this past week, amidst the joy of Advent and Christmas, new chapters in various lives have contributed to who SMC is becoming. For example, some of you may know that Shauna Clark, one of our beloved worship leaders, got engaged to Bradley Akers on Christmas Eve. But perhaps you didn't know it happened right here in our building after the Christmas Eve service, or that a few folks from SMC helped orchestrate that magical moment. While Shauna and Bradley's story is theirs to tell and enjoy, their joy becomes part of ours because they are part of us. Another chapter unfolding is that of our very own Rev. Ben Richards. As I write this, I'm happy to report that his surgery today [Friday] was a success, and he's now recovering at home. Ben, being a person who doesn’t like a lot of attention or fuss, almost tried to enter this chapter of his story without much help from our congregation. But thankfully, with some “gentle” encouragement, he opened up to us about his journey. He even allowed us to help with his meals (see below for details on how you can contribute). As his friends and loved ones, we get to walk alongside him by giving him space to heal, preparing meals, and offering daily prayers. Ben's chapter of healing becomes SMC's chapter of love and care, where we nurture our own shepherd. As I prepare to deliver the message for the last Sunday of 2023, I find myself reflecting on how each of our unique stories contributes to the life and ministry of San Marco Church. Even those of you who join us online shouldn't underestimate your impact. SMC is what it is because of you: the people who fill our pews, walk our halls, worship with us online, and call this vibrant community home. Your story, with its celebrations, challenges, and everything in between, is deeply intertwined with ours, becoming part of the narrative of how we are together championing the inclusive Gospel of Jesus Christ for the transformation of San Marco, Jacksonville, and the world. As we ring in a new year full of possibilities and hope, let's never forget the power of our own stories and how they contribute to the grand narrative of this congregation of the United Methodist Church.
