It’s almost Lent, y’all. We are about to embark into this holy, contemplative season. I say “embark” because it’s a journey, and “we” because you are invited. Lent is intended as a journey of transformation. We spend time in ashes, we remember our mortality and sin, not to be morose or self-flagellating – literally or figuratively – but to encounter Easter in all its glory. To celebrate life and victory in Jesus, and in his resurrection. Resurrection is not just a promise, it’s a victory. And what it overcomes is not just eternal punishment, but sets us free today. So get excited, y’all; it’s almost Lent. Here are some ways you can participate: Ash Wednesday Worship:Wednesday, February 14 is Ash Wednesday, and we will hold a special worship service with the imposition of ashes that evening at 6:30. Undertake a spiritual discipline:People often give something up (fast) or take on a spiritual discipline during Lent. Maybe you begin each day with spiritual music or reading scripture. Or if you’d like to be a part of a communal book study… Read the book:Through the season of Lent our worship series will be “Living the Resurrection”, and will parallel themes from Bishop Tom Berlin’s new book: The Third Day: Living the Resurrection. I commend the book to you as reading to accompany the series as it will be a nice partner to dive a bit deeper into the ideas and characters we will consider in worship. In addition, if you’d like to join a group discussion on the book, our Wednesday Night Bible Study group will also be utilizing it (6:30p in the conference room) and you are welcome to join us. Please note: if you would like to read the book but purchasing it is a hindrance in any way, don’t hesitate to let me know and SMC will happily provide you with a copy. Reflect on the power of resurrection in your life:Throughout the season we will offer the opportunity to reflect on resurrection beyond our worship experiences by sharing with others. As we consider how resurrection impacts our lives here and now, how we are being transformed, we will provide opportunities to share these, which you will be able to do via card or online submission. Answers can be anonymous. Some may be shared as reminders and celebrations in worship, and will be collected over three churches that are participating in this together. Happy Lent.
