In a conversation with my mentor this morning, I was bragging on y’all, telling him how grateful I am to be a part of San Marco Church, and especially for the ways you have offered yourselves to me. How I have learned so much from you. When we hung up, I thought about how I might share that in today’s blog… Then I wrote an email to our executive committee that touched on the recent security system transition, because when it comes to the security system, I’m the boss. Not just because it’s my name on the system, but because I know it. Inside and out. Better than anyone besides those that installed it. I’m the one that can add, change, remove accounts and privileges. I’m the one that cancels the alarm when it goes off. I’m the one that teaches people how to use it. I’m the boss. Then I had to run by the district office. And instead of disarming the alarm there, I triggered it. Because in that office, I’m the dunce. From boss to dunce. And all I had to do was cross the street. It’s funny, but also amazing to me how little it takes to go between the two, to shift from comfort zones to danger zones. And it can happen so fast, almost as if we find ourselves on a highway to the danger zone. It brought me back to my gratitude for y’all, for the ways you risk sharing yourselves with me and one another. It’s the beauty of Christian community: the opportunity to learn from one another, from the experiences and stories of one another. But it only happens when people are willing to open themselves up to it. To the risk of sharing yourself, and the risk of revealing to another you’re out of your comfort zone but you’re there because you want to learn from them. So thank you, San Marco Church, not only for your commitment to building a vibrant and diverse community that champions the inclusive Gospel of Christ, but for the ways we strive to, and are, living it out together.
